Art Dog: Clever Canines of the Art World

Rizzoli New York joined such prestigious American institutions as Tiffany’s, Saks, and Cartier when it first opened the Rizzoli Bookstore on Fifth Avenue in 1964. In the following years, its landmark building in New York became the center for the company’s national expansion, adding new bookstores throughout the country and, a decade later, establishing an eminent publishing house renowned today for high-quality, illustrated books.

Dogs have been man’s best friend for as long as we’ve been sketching on canvas. In the background, dogs of the past peer out from paintings and sketches, frescoes and prints across art history. Art Dog is a collection of these painted pooches, featuring works from artists across ages and continents. Japanese prints and German oils, American sketches and Italian murals are all included. The works spans eras and styles, but as different as these dogs are, one thing shines through: the love we’ve always had for them.
